Tutorial: iPhone Travel Pouch from Scraps

I joke that my naughty nieces think I can make them anything but it seems like they get this from their mother. Last week less than 24 hours before my sister was scheduled to fly to Thailand (while I had people over for a movie night, that had not started) she handed me some fabric and said she wanted a pouch to put her iphone, cord, and headphones in bwahahahaha. Seriously?
The next day after church she asked if she was going to get her bag I said she'd ever get a new pouch or I'd hand her a ziploc. I decided to take a shot at the bag and I think it turned out pretty cute. It was a pretty quick project as you can imagine. Here's how you can make your own.  What You Need

  • fabric scraps long piece 5x20 inches short pieces are each 5x5 inches
  • scrap of ribbon
  • small piece of rick rack
  • 1 button
What To Do
  1. Sew the ends of the short pieces of fabric (this will be the bottom seam)
  2. Sew the other ends of the short pieces to the long piece. You will have a tube of fabric.
  3. With right sides together fold the fabric to align the outside pieces. You want the two short pieces to match up so the seam is at one end and the other edge of the short piece (my bird cages) lines up. See the 3rd picture.
  4. Pin so that fabric does not shift.
  5. Sew the two long edges leaving a small hole.
  6. Right side out the fabric and iron folding under the edges of the hole.
  7. Make a little tab by tying a knot in some ribbon and run the cut edge of the ribbon across a flame to keep it from unraveling.
  8. Line up the fabric so that the short edges of the bottom fabric meet and position ribbon. Stitch around the both side edges. Iron down flap.
  9. Sew on rick rack to flap edge (if you want it to be extra pretty you can do this step before you flip the whole thing so it's sandwiched nicely inside the layers but I decided to add this detail at the end).
  10. Sew on a button.
  11. Sew a buttonhole and cut.
  12. Take pictures of your beautiful creation and email them to me or post them on the raegun facebook page...umm I mean look at your beautiful new pouch and stuff it with goodies (really I'd love to see yours if you make one!)

This obviously doesn't have protection it's more of a keep it all together type of pouch but you could add a layer of felt to give it extra padding if you want. You could easily make all different sizes by adjusting the measurements. Really I just cut out some fabric and sewed the ends together and folded it to see how I wanted it. I see more of these in my future, I'm thinking a smaller one for my iPod nano.
