Hogwarts Textbooks Skirt and 20 Minute Knit A-line Skirt Tutorial

Must make Harry Potter inspired Text book skirt. Step by step tutorial instructions

Can you believe it's almost time to polish off our trunks and send the little ones back to Hogwarts? Well it is. Back to school time is right around the corner but for many girls in foster care clothing can be a huge source of stress. My friends over at Simple Simon and Co do an awesome series every July called Skirting the Issue where bloggers share tons of skirt tutorials and encourage people to sew up skirts and donate them to girls in foster care. It's pretty awesome considering skirts are one of the EASIEST thing to make.

Super easy fold over knit a-line skirt tutorial

Since it always corresponds with my Happy Harry Potter series I tend to make Potter related skirts. Last year I shared a super easy Striped House Pride Skirt Tutorial and this year I'm crazy excited to share my Hogwarts Textbook Skirt and 20 minute knit skirt tutorial. Swish and Flick skirt Hermione - Rae Gun Ramblings I have made myself a few of these knit skirts including this Swish and Flick skirt (goodness I really do have a lot of Potter wearables). It's so comfy, comes together super fast and can be worn to all more casual or dressed up. Let's start with the basic skirt and then I'll show you how to make put all the text books on it if that's your thing :)

How to make an Aline skirt pattern

Start by Making Yourself a Pattern
  1. Make sure you have a relatively stretchy fabric.
  2. Start by folding your fabric in half then in half again making sure the stretch goes across the width of the fabric.
  3. Take a skirt you like the way it fits (can be stretchy or not, pencil skirt or a-line) flatten it out and then fold it in half. Lay it on top of your fabric folded edge to folded edges of the fabric. If it is a pencil skirt I take my ruler and angle out from about where the widest part of my hip its all the way down to the edge of the fabric. Trace (or cut if your brave) around about 1/2 inch from the edge of your garment. Leave extra space at the bottom if you plan on hemming your skirt (sometimes I leave the edges raw).
  4. Next measure across the top part of the skirt when it's flat (so from one side to the other). And make yourself a band. You want the band to be 5 inches wide by whatever the measurement across the top of the skirt is minus 4 inches. You need two of these pieces.
  5. Measure from the top of your skirt to the bottom edge and make sure that distance is the same all around. You'll probaby have to trim a tiny bit off of that outer corner.
If you don't have a skirt you love I recommend that you check out liZ's super easy tutorial on how to make your own knit pencil skirt pattern off of your own body (it only takes 20 minutes to do that AND make a skirt). I used my skirt I made from their pattern as my base and to make it an A-line I just angled it out and trimmed the bottom corners up.

easy instructions on how to sew a knit aline skirt in just 20 minutes

Sew the Skirt Together
  1. With right sides together sew the short ends of the band pieces together. You should now have a tube.
  2. Then fold it in half wrong sides together.
  3. Take your two skirt pieces and with right sides together sew each side seam.
  4. Pin your band matching the side seams to the right side of the skirt matching the raw edges of the band to the raw top edge of the skirt.
  5. Sew around. Fold the band up and you have a skirt.
  6. From here you can hem the skirt using my super easy hemming knits trick, finish it with a rolled edge, or just leave it raw (since it's a knit it won't unravel).

Super adorable Hogwarts textbook skirt tutorial inspired by the harry potter books

That's all there is to making a simple A-line knit skirt. Now if you want to add text books to your skirt what you need to do is get a bunch of scraps of fabric and cut them into strips.

Love this tutorial for making a cute booknerd Harry Potter textbook skirt. Great DIY tutorial

How a to Make Hogwarts Text Book Skirt
  1. Once you have your skirt made (or you can start with a ready to wear skirt) position your fabric strips on your skirt to know how wide and long you want them. Write down how much space you have on each piece for lettering this will help you get your text ready.
  2. Next back each fabric strip with light Heat n Bond. You do this by ironing the WRONG side of the fabric to the heat n bond paper. Once it cools you pull the paper backing off and you'll be able to iron it right onto your skirt.
  3. Position all your fabric "books" onto your skirt and iron.
  4. Next add your text. I cut the text out of Iron On Vinyl. If you have never used heat transfer vinyl before its one of my all time favorite craft supplies. Here is a whole post about how to use heat transfer vinyl complete with LOTS of pictures. If you have an Cricut Explore you can use my file (for personal use only although it might ask you to pay for the fonts BUT you can always just edit it to fonts that are free for you). What you will do now is in Cricut Design Space edit the text to make sure that the text sizes match up to your fabric strip sizes. If you have some other cutting machine you can easily just make the text by typing it out yourself. Iron the letters onto your "books" If you don't have a cutting machine you can add your letters by embroidering or even with fabric markers or paint!
  5. Add the best book The Monster Book of Monsters by using a scrap of fur fabric and sew on eyes. I just used  a three step zig zag to put that piece on (skipped the heat n bond) and sew on eye buttons.
  6. Finally top stitch around each of the other fabric strips.

ahh Harry Potter books! Hogwarts textbook skirt diy tutorial

Super cute right? While the actual skirt making is fast the cutting and weeding and placing of the letters do take time but I absolutely love my skirt and am so excited for how it turned out.

Wizarding World of Harry potter Frozen Butterbeer recipe - Rae Gun Ramblings

I've been wanting to try my hand at making a Frozen Butterbeer Recipe ever since I visited The Wizarding World of Harry Potter a few years ago. Since we're closing out this year's Happy Harry Potter series I thought it was the perfect time. This recipe is so easy and yummy you'll feel like you're at The Three Broomsticks.

Delicious and refreshing frozen butterbeer recipe perfect for Harry Potter fans - Rae Gun Ramblings

Butterbeer is a butterscotch drink. In the Harry Potter books it's served in Hogsmeade at The Three Broomsticks and The Hog's Head. In Diagon Alley wizards can get the delicacy at The Leaky Cauldron. Luckily making your own is super easy. The recipe below is portioned to make 2 generous servings but it can easily be increased or decreased according to your needs. Don't worry about the exact measurements it's more about getting a flavor and consistency you like. The way I like it (which is the way it's served in Potterland) it should be the consistency of a frappacino.

What you need to make Frozen Butterbeer at home - Rae Gun Ramblings

Ingredients
  • 2 Scoops Vanilla Ice Cream
  • 2 C Ice Cubes
  • 1-2 C Cream Soda
  • 2-3 TBS Butterscotch Sauce
  • Whipped Cream (optional)

Delicious Frozen Butterbeer recipe just like Potterland - Rae Gun Ramblings

Directions
  1. Add the Ice cream, ice and 1 cup of soda to a blender and mix.
  2. Add more soda if needed for a thinner consistency.
  3. Once blended add a generous squeeze of butterscotch sauce and blend. You want to add it at the end since it tends to clump to the side of you add it from the start. I also recommend grabbing a pack of Wet-Nap wipes since the butterscotch is SO sticky and stringy that you'll want to be able to wipe your hands quickly and easily. I find this works the best. I found mine at Walmart. They have them in the napkin isle and sometimes in the hygiene isle by other baby and lady wipes.
  4. Pour into cup and if using whipped cream add that.
  5. Then finish with an extra drizzle of butterscotch sauce.

And just because it was so ridiculous let me share some behind the scene shots. Unless you're a blogger yourself you probably don't really get how silly those of us who blog are. We make food at weird times so we can photograph with optimal light. Our family members all ask if we got a picture before they take their first bite and and then there is the race to get the shot when the item is melty.

Behind the scenes of food blogging and butterbeer - Rae Gun Ramblings

THIS is what happened when I was trying to get the perfect pic of the butterbeer. Seriously I went to move the cup to get another angle and some of the deliciousness had pooled on my posterboard ack. AND it was all over my hands and I was juggling a camera. Thankfully I had the Wet-Nap wipes close by since they are sponsoring this post so with Daniel juggling the wiggly baby and me not wanting to get my camera all sticky I cleaned up my hands quickly and was able to get it off the poster board without damaging it too. It's like it was meant to be ha.

I like the Wet-Nap wipes because they are made for people so they moisturize while still being strong. Somethings I get weired out using cleaning wipes too much on my skin but it's nice since the Wet-Nap kind work for stuff too in a pinch. If you want to try them make sure to print this coupon out while supplies last. So there you go. My slobby bloggy mess. But it was worth it to have some yummy butterbeer.

Bellatrix Lestrange Dress

Good Morning, House of RaeGun!
It's Kat from Sew Chibi here with my chibi Bellatrix Lestrange!
I was pretty stoked to be a part of this series!  Harry Potter is much loved in our household!
Last year New Year's I took a couple of pictures on Instagram and made jokes about how my Sephira, with her wild hair, sometimes looks very Bellatrix-y!
When I started brainstorming I quickly fell upon the idea of Bellatrix.  And even though I had already overloaded myself with projects for July, I was compelled to be a part of this tour!

I don't normally root for bad guys, and I may never forgive her for what she did to Sirius, but I can't help but love anything Helena Bonham Carter does.
So I had to make a dress of course.  And it had to be very wearable, well, because, it just had to!  One of my favorite things to do is to take characters from various geeky things and make them into handmade, everyday wearables.
I decided to go with a simple black jersey knit and black swirl stretch lace mini skater dress.
The pattern is by Kitschy Coo and I feel like I don't make enough of these!!  I made it in a 18/2T size for my 3 year old and it fits just perfect!
And even though some kiddos may not gravitate to dark colors, my little one is a lover of all colors.  I did take a little insurance and did a big sell on the dress to her.
"Mommy's going to make you a black dress and it's going to be so soft!"
"Black!  Black's my favorite color!" [which she says for every color]
Misson accomplished.
It was surprisingly easier and faster than I expected since I was dealing with two layers and one of them was slippery, err, slythery lace.
I didn't want to make just a dress, so I fashioned a wand to look like Bellatrix's crooked wand.  I used fashion wire (that I always keep on hand) and a mixture of mahogany and black FIMO clay that I wrapped and molded around the wire, making grooves to mimic wood.  I baked it for a little longer that recommended (although I should have gone even longer I think) and finished it by using various coats of black, mahogany stain, and a little gold acrylic paint.
I love the way it looks, as does my chibi Bellatrix!
Thanks so much Marissa for being so awesomesauce as to do a Harry Potter sewing series!  It's always fun to get geeky with others!
Stop by and visit me at Sew Chibi sometimes if you're into wacky handmades!

Sew Our Stash Potter Style

Harry Potter Inspired Swish and Flick Skirt at Rae Gun Ramblings I have a ton of Harry Potter shirts but no skirts yet so I decided to do something about that. I made two simple knit skirts in the same style as my 20 minute maxi skirt tutorial but shortened up. Don't make fun of me for making two gray skirts for Sew Our Stash Potter Style because I actually really like them and I know I'll wear them. I'm a bit of a gray fiend.

Sew Our Stash challenge hosted by Rae Gun Ramblings and Flamingo Toes

The actual skirt part was very fast. To the first one I added a vinyl iron-on that I made to the bottom. After making my little Gryffindor House Pride Skirt and the Swish and Flick top I wanted to make myself a Swish and Flick something. I'm really happy with how this turned out. Swish and Flick skirt Hermione - Rae Gun Ramblings I've been wanting to make a book shelf skirt kinda like this one for a long time. I've had dreams about something gathered and full with a sash and a big bow that ties. I picture it to be very Zooey Daschanel but this month that level of sewing was NOT about to happen. I mean really where the heck did July go? So knit aline it was. I just took some strips of fabric and put heat and bond on them and that's really it.

Book psuedo quilt skirt - Rae Gun Ramblings

I think I want to top stitch it still but I keep going back and forth to whether I want to add book titles to the "bindings". What do you think? My original idea was going to be to add some of the titles of Wizard World books from Harry Potter using more you guest it heat transfer vinyl but I'm not sure I might like the weird psuedo-quilted look that's going on. And maybe I'll still do that fuller version that's been stuck in my head.

This month Bev is sharing another awesome round up at Flamingo Toes. Make sure you go check it out. And I hope you're still making time to sew for yourself. If you are make sure to snap some pics and post them on Instagram and tag them #sewourstash. Until next month :)

Hogwarts Class of Baby Onesie Tutorial

Fun Harry Potter inspired onesie. Class of '32 at Rae Gun Ramblings

I kind of want to dress Teddy in Harry Potter stuff every day. I'm only kind of kidding. Seriously after our baby Harry Potter photoshoot I've been obsessed. Hence this Hogwarts Class of Baby Onesie Tutorial I have for you today. Are you shocked and surprised it's a vinyl project. If you don't know how to use iron-vinyl it's one of my all time favorite craft products. It's super easy to use to customize clothing fabric and so much more. Checkout this how to use iron-on vinyl post for a very detailed picture-ful treatment of the technique.

How to make your own Hogwarts Class of '32 (or other year) onesie. Tutorial at Rae GUn Ramblings

You can make your own vinyl or I'm selling the Hogwarts class of precut vinyl in my shop here. To make your own the easiest way is to design it using a cutting machine like the Cricut Explore. When you go to cut make sure you are cutting the mirror image (or else everything will be backwards) and that you're cutting with the vinyl side up (and plastic side down). Once you have your vinyl cut out and weeded (that is you pulled away all the negative space), lay the vinyl down on your onesie and iron. You want to iron by pressing and holding as opposed to rubbing the iron back and forth.

Geeky Harry Potter onesie. Class of '32 Tutorial at Rae Gun Ramblings

It's best to use vinyl on clothing that won't stretch much since the vinyl isn't going to stretch with the garment. Once the vinyl is ironed onto the shirt pull away the plastic that it comes on. Lay a piece of scrap fabric or just flip the onesie over so the back of the shirt is up and iron again just to make sure the seal is good and firm.

Put on your favorite baby and celebrate your good parenting decisions. Don't feel like making your own? I'm selling the Hogwarts Class of oneises in my shop.
