Easy Knit Skirt Tutorial

I love a good comfy but still play-in-able skirt. This easy knit skirt tutorial is perfect for cranking out tons of easy to wear skirts the kiddos with love.

Great sewing tutorial so easy to adjust for different sizes. The kid loves this knit skirt and I love that it was an easy sew in less than 30 minutes.

I did a kid size one for my niece but I love how it turned out so I’m thinking of making an adult version. You could easily make this for any size person including adults and babies with just a few measurement changes.

Darling quick and easy sewing tutorial. 30 minute knit skirt (and that's totally Gryffindor inspired!)

Today I’m sharing this obviously as a part of my Happy Harry Potter series. Gryffindor PRIDE!!! But also in conjunction with the girls from Simple Simon and Co and their Skirting the Issue series. I’ve participated in this for a few years and it’s such a great cause. The basic idea is to sew and donate skirts to girls in foster care so they can have something new to wear when the school year starts. It’s such a cool thing and since skirts are SO easy to make it’s very very easy to get involved. Here are a ton easy skirt tutorials! This year I’m going to have my nieces sew a few to send over! You can read more about the program and how to get involved here. Now let me show you have quick and easy it is to make this little knit skirt.

Measurements You Need

  • Elastic Waist Measurement: unstretched, for this almost 8 year old (she wears size 7/8) I used 22 inches and when sewn it ends up being about 21 inches around when not stretched.
  • Skirt Length Measurement: we wanted a fun cheerleader skirt feel so it’s a little on the short size but this skirt I cut the fabric 12 inches the full 60″ length of the fabric (if your fabric is only 54″ that should work fine too if you’re making it an adult size you might want to add some width but maybe not just wrap it around yourself and see if you like the fullness). You will lose about 1/2 inch in length sewing. I left the bottom edge unsewn but if you want to hem it add in some extra length for that. This is my favorite way to hem knits if you’re curious about that.

30 Minute Knit skirt tutorial. So cute but comfy too. Made this and the kiddo loves it. Will sew more!

What You Need

  • 2 inch elastic (I cut 22″ x 2″)
  • Knit Skirt Fabric (I cut 12″ tall by 60″ wide)
  • Knit Band Fabric 4.5″ by the length of your elastic (I cut 4.5″ X 22″) You can skip the band fabric but I think it gives it a more clean look.

What to Do

  1. Sew or serge the short ends of your main fabric right sides together to form a tube.
  2. Do the same for the band fabric.
  3. Overlap the elastic and sew down using a zig zag stitch to form a tube.
  4. Gather the top edge of the main fabric tube. I found this cheater serger gathering trick works great for this.
  5. Fold the band fabric around the elastic so it’s like a sandwich tube.
  6. Line up the raw edges of the band (so 3 layers fabric elastic fabric) with the right side of the gathered edge of the skirt and make sure the fabric is gathered but not all the way flush with the elastic you want it 4-6 inches wider than the elastic (or really a little bit wider than the wearer’s hips).
  7. Serge the band to the skirt stretching the elastic as you go. It’s a bit awkward especially on a kids item since the 2 inch elastic tends to be tight but just go slow and stop and readjust as needed.
  8. And you are done!

We're obsessed with these 30 minute knit skirts. Great easy sewing tutorial

Easy TMNT Icon Shirt Tutorial

Do you know a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fan? Well today I’m sharing a super easy TMNT Icon Shirt Tutorial.

Cute and easy DIY teenage mutant ninja turtle icon shirt tutorial

I went to a cute little (ninja turtle obsessed) boys birthday party and knew that he need his own one of a kind TMNT shirt. You see he’s a HUGE fan of Leonardo.

my favorite raglan shirt pattern

I also happened to decide he needed this just a few hours before his party. AND I sewed the actual shirt part. SO when I see this is a fast and easy project that’s what I mean. You totally DON’T have to sew a shirt but honestly it was faster for me to make one instead of drive somewhere hoping to find a plain shirt in a color that would work. I used Peek-a-boo pattern shop’s Happy Feet shirt pattern and some fabric from Joann

Fast and easy DIY teenage mutant ninja turtle tutorial. Cute gift idea for TMNT fans.

What You Need

How to make a teenage mutant ninja turtle shirt. Great DIY tutorial.

What to Do

  1. Search for Pizza, Turtle, and Mask in Cricut Design Space (the free program that comes with the Cricut Explore) and you’ll be able to find the images I used. You can see the original images on the bottom row and then the ones in yellow are how I made it look right before I cut them out.
    1. For the Pizza I made all the layers one layer so it would cut it all out of one color.
    2. For the Turtle I hid everything except for the shell layers.  Then I made the outside rim the same layer as the rest of the shell.
    3. For the Mask all I needed to do was resize it.
  2. Measure the width you want them to take up on your shirt and position and size them them accordingly. Then select all and “attach” them.
  3. Cut out using your cutting machine (for more on this step see my long How to Use Heat Transfer Vinyl article)
  4. Peel off the negative space.
  5. Position it on your shirt.
  6. Iron it on.

DIY Pop Up Card Tutorial

We love dandelions in our house and we love a good pop up card so today I’m sharing a speedy 15 minute tutorial for making a dandelion photo pop up card.

Love this cute sassy Father's Day card idea. DIY pop up card tutorial.

This would make a darling gift for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day or really anytime you need a card. We’re using this one as part of our gift for Father’s Day. Pair it with a gift card and we’re good to go.

How to make a photo pop up card in just 15 minutes. Great DIY craft tutorial

What You Need

  • Markers
  • 2 Sheets Card Stock
  • 1 Sheet Colored Paper
  • 1-2 photos
  • Scissors
  • Paper Cutter
  • Tape
  • Double Sided Tape

What to Do

  1. Fold your card stock pieces in half to form a card.
  2. Use the markers to draw on the front of one of the pieces of card stock (what will be the front of the card). This is a great step to get the kids involved in.
  3. Use a paper cutter, I used my Cricut Explore, to cut “I Love You” on the front side of the card. I used the Scratchbook font from the Font Collection bundle on FontBundle.net
  4. Next cut out your photo(s). Position it on the inside of your card to determine where you want your text.
  5. Print the inside of your card with “More than all the dandelions in our yard.” Or any other phrase you want. If you’re curious I used the fonts Scratchbook and Faithful both from the Font Collection bundle.
  6. Next cut two slits into the fold of the inside piece of your card for every pop up you want. These should be about 1/2 inch deep and about 1/8-1/4 inches apart. Then fold that piece in to form your pop up base.
  7. Using double sided tape (or glue) attach your cut out photo(so).
  8. Next cut your colored sheet so that it will cover your cutout front cover text and tape it to the back side of the cut out.
  9. With WRONG SIDES together tape the inner piece of card to the outer piece of card with double sided tape.
  10. Now your card is ready for a hand written note and gifting!
