What You Need

Fun ideas for DIY safety flashlights for Halloween

What to Do

  1. Measure the lighted surface of your flashlight.
  2. Find images to cut (I just used the ones in Cricut design space) and reside to .2 inches less than the max width of you flashlight.
  3. Repeat for the outside decoration. I found the cute Trick or Treat just by searching “trick or treat” in design space.
  4. Cut from either vinyl or window cling. Window click will be more transparent but since you are leaving a .2 inch border there should still be plenty of light either way. In my pictures the black is vinyl the orange is window cling.
  5. Weed (remove negative spaces) and position your cuts on the flashlight.

DIY Expecto Patronum Bath Bombs

Love Harry Potter and a relaxing bath? Well these DIY Expecto Patronum bath bomb are just what the doctor ordered!

how to make Harry Potter bath bombs DIY tutorial

I’m a Lush addict but the price tag on the fancy bath fizzles umm no thanks. So I finally decided to make my own and of course I couldn’t do just any old bath bombs I had to do Harry Potter ones. I made three versions in all but these first ones are supposed to represent the Expecto Patronum spell.

DIY Expecto Patronum Harry Potter Bath Bombs

In the books and movies this charm is used for protection. Your patronus  appears in an animal form and can help fight off various dangers. A witch or wizard doesn’t get to pick their patronus it just is.

Harry Potter Surprise Bath Bombs Patronus

So when you place this star covered bath bomb in the tub it glitters and fizzes with power and reveals a hidden animal bead signifying your patronus. FUN right!?

How to Make a Harry Potter Patronus Bath Bombs

1). Combine Wet Ingredients

  • 3/4 tsp water
  • 2tsp essential oil
  • 2 1/2 tsp coconut oil, melted

2). Combine Dry Ingredients

Note: I combined the colorings after I mixed the other ingredients but I think it would work better to add it to the wet ingredients but I was noncommittal on colors before ;)

3). SLOWLY add the wet ingredients to the dry. Drop by drop. And mix. Mixing with hands works better. Divide up and color as desired

how to make galaxy bath bombs

4). Place a small amount of edible stars into one half of the bath bomb mold.

5). Fill mold. Press to pack down and fill more so it’s mounding over the top. Place a small animal figurine, bead or other “patronus” onto the mound. Just make sure the patronus is big enough if won’t go down the drain.

6). Fill the other half of the mold so it is packed and overflowing. Smoosh together and twist so that the excess presses out through the center. Press time. If you have extra molds let it sit in the mold to dry for a few minutes or until fully dry. If you don’t have extras then carefully remove the bath bomb and repeat the steps until you use up your mixture. I find that when I take time to color and change the designs by my very last bath bomb it’s dry and has a hard time holding but the rest until then do great.

Reversible Kids Book Bag Tutorial and Bookroo Review

sponsored-affiliate-disclosure

No more juggling awkward sized kid books with this easy kids book bag tutorial and learn about my newest book mail favorite, Bookroo.

children's book bag tutorial with free pattern. Big enough tote for picture books. Easy sewing project.

We’re book fanatics in my house. It’s not just me and all my YA Lit either. My kiddo has just as many books as I do, maybe more. We have books shelves (or at least designated spots for books) in every single room.

How to find unique Children's books

I don’t think I need to convince you guys about how valuable it is to read to our little ones but here are a few of my favorites perks. From problem solving to random facts about the world, to the beginnings of reading, when we read to our kids they learn. There is a special bonding that happens when you read together. There is almost always cuddling just since it’s the natural position to sharing a book and the reading time is focused in a way that little other activities are in our hyper connected world. And with the mesh of those two reading somehow opens up amazing conversations. Books and kids are just a good mix.

Read to me please. Toddler sized library book bag and bookroo subscription review. Fun gift idea.

We love our time at the library and sometimes bring home books but when the kids are so little and let’s face it germy I honestly prefer to own our own. So I’m thrilled to be partnering with Bookroo a monthly book subscription. Every month we will be getting some happy book mail. I know that I love my Owlcrate so I’m crazy excited that Teddy will have his own bookish box! I think this would make just the perfect gift for just about any kid. More info and how to get 20% off a Bookroo subscription below.

Unique Gift Idea for Toddlers and Older Children. Great birthday present or Christmas gift.

Have you ever noticed that picture books can be so large and not fit in your standard book bag? Umm yeah. So I thought it would be fun to make a book bag specifically to tote Teddy’s reads in. My design is nice and wide, perfect for lugging those over-sized books around plus I’ve got a little slot for your library card. Fun right?

What You Need

  • 1/2 Yard Outer Fabric
  • 1/2 Yard Inner Fabric
  • Iron-On Vinyl (optional)
  • Reading Design (optional, just right click and save from this post)

What to do

  1. Cut Outer into two pieces each 16 inches wide x 17 tall. Make sure your fabric faces the right direction if it’s a directional print.
  2. Repeat with the Inner Fabric.
  3. Cut two strips fabric 6 inches wide by 17 tall. If you’re using quilting cottons that are 44 inches wide this should be the remaining fabric after you cut the outer and inner pieces. This can be out of either fabric this will be your strap fabric.
  4. With right sides together sew the sides and bottom edges of the outer fabric together. Repeat with the lining fabric.
  5. Turn the outer fabric right sides out.
  6. Sew the card holder on sewing down the sides and bottom edge. To keep the vinyl from sticking to the pressor foot place a piece of wrapping tissue paper in between the vinyl and the foot while you sew. When you are done just pull it off.
  7. Tuck the lining fabric into the outer fabric and iron down the top edge of both 1 inch. Set aside.
  8. Sew the two pieces of the strap together along the short edge making sure that your pattern will face the right direction when the strap is attached.
  9. Fold the strap in half lengthwise and sew down. Turn right sides out and iron.
  10. Tuck the ends into the side seams of the bag and sew all around the top edge making sure to catch the lining, outer fabric and the strap.
  11. If you want to add some vinyl do that now. See this iron-on vinyl tutorial if you’ve never tried that before.

They have a panel of 12 families (with a total of 22 kids) that rate the books for all kinds of things including re-readability. It’s no wonder they find such fun titles! I love a good quote about reading and Lemony Snicket Quotes are some of the best!

lemony snicket necklace DIY crafting tutorial

I’m super excited that A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket is getting another chance this time on Netflix. I really liked the movie version I thought it was gorgeous and got the wacky quirkiness of the books.

Easiest way to make upcycled bottle Cap necklaces and Lemony Snicket quotes

I read a bunch of the books which I think are lots of fun for your young reader. A lot of silliness and adventure. And there are tons of them. I didn’t get through all of them because I just don’t do middle grade (or this might be younger even, chapter books?) that well and like most book series for this age group the stories are pretty formulaic but they are still fun.

DIY book nerd necklaces. Cute upcycled bottle cap craft tutorial

So I’m excited for the new life and to celebrate I thought I’d pull together some of my favorite book and reading related Lemony Snicket quote because there are tons. And of course I had to make a couple into some bookish necklaces because I can’t pass up a good book quote necklace!

DIY Holly Shoe Jingle Bells Tutorial

I’d love to put a little Christmas spirit in your step, quite literally. I made these adorable DIY Holly Shoe Jingle Bells and I’m giddy about how they turned out.

Love this simple Christmas craft. DIY holly shoe bells tutorial and free pattern

Today I’m joining in on I Heart Naptime‘s annual Crazy Christmas Event. Every year Jamielyn invites loads of talented bloggers to share tons of awesome crafts, recipes, and printables perfect for Christmas. Hop over to see how I made these fun Holly Shoe Bells. P.S. I made the pattern in 3 sizes baby, kiddo and teen/adult.

UPDATED: The following tutorial originally appeared on I Heart Naptime on 11/29/2016

I love the festive little jingle the little holly adds to every step. But more than that I love how quick and easy this little craft comes together.

Such a fun way to dress up our shoes for Christmas. Easy jingle bell holly shoe accessories. Full tutorial and free pattern.

This is easy enough that even elementary school kids who can do basic hand sewing could make their own if you help them cut out the leaves.

Christmas shoe craft. Cute jingle bell holly accessories.

What You Need

How to make Christmas holly shoes that jingle. Easy craft tutorial

What to Do

  1. Cut 2 holly leaves out for each shoe you want to dress up. There are three sizes on the pattern so they can work for baby shoes, kids, and teens/ adults.
  2. Cut a pipe cleaner in half and then fold that in half to find the middle.
  3. Sandwich the middle of the pipe cleaner between the points of two leaves. Take a couple stitched to sew the pipe cleaner to the leaves.
  4. Thread one bell onto your needle and stitch in place. Repeat for the rest of bells.
  5. Take a couple extra stitches to secure the sewing in place before knotting. This will help prevent the stitch from pulling through if the bells get man handled.
  6. Secure the bling to the shoe by threading one side through a shoelace hole and twisting. Alternatively you can simply slide the pipe cleaner under the shoelace and twist to fasten it in place.

Easy to remove Christmas jingle bell bling. Holly shoe tutorial.

I think these turned out so stinking cute. My 2 1/2 year old little boy got SO excited when I put one on his shoe he LOVED dancing and spinning around.

And as adorable as I think it is I love that when we went to watch his cousin’s gymnastic competition I could quickly and easily remove the holly so we wouldn’t be disruptive.
