100+ Books for Divergent Fans

Huge list of books to read after Divergent. Lots of good ones and ones I haven't read yet!

Insurgent hits the theaters later this month so to celebrate I thought I’d make a massive gigantor list of books for Divergent fans. I know that Divergent struck a chord with so many of us and whether you have been reading ever since or you just keep meaning to find another book I’ve got some great suggestions for your reading list. Between all the books in all of these series there are well over 100 books in this list so plenty for you to pick from.

Since there are so many I’m breaking them down into different groups. I’m not putting any descriptions just because that would make the post crrrrraaaaazy long. But I’m linking all the books so feel free to click on the titles to read the synopses on amazon. I’ll make sure to update this list as I read other great books and if I have missed any of your favorites please leave them in the comments and I’ll make sure to add them too!

My Top Fifteen Books for Divergent Lovers

What to read after Divergent. Huge list of awesome YA reads.

These books are some of my favorites. Most of them are series. Actually all of them except Atlantia. So there are a lot of books in that bunch. Some are finished some are new and still have books coming out. All of them I adored. When I think of Divergent I think of Tris and her strong personality, action and fighting, romance and friendship, sassy banter, a political/social setting that is off or dystopian. Each of these share many of these features. Some are more realistic like Divergent and some have magical elements. All of them are great! And some I’ve grown to love even more than Divergent (gasp, I know don’t tell okay).

  1. Legend Trilogy by Marie Lu
  2. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer (starts with Cinder)
  3. The Lone City Trilogy by Amy Ewing (starts with The Jewel)
  4. Snow Like Ashes by Sarah Raasch
  5. The Program by Suzanne Young
  6. Insignia by S.J. Kincaid
  7. Pivot Point by Kasie West
  8. Fire and Thorn Series by Rae Carson (starts with Girl of Fire and Thorns)
  9. Graceling by Kristin Cashore

  12. Atlantia by Ally Condie
  13. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
  14. Blackout by Robison Wells
  15. The Ward by Jordana Frankel

Classics of Sorts, If You Haven’t Read Them You Should I Love These!

  1. The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins
  2. Ender’s Game and then The Shadow Series by Orson Scott Card
  3. The Harry Potter Books by J.K. Rowling
  4. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

I Liked These Too But I’d Recommend Them After The First Two Groups

  3. Matched Trilogy by Ally Condie
  4. Birthmarked by Caragh M. O’Brien
  5. Reboot by Amy Tintera
  6. Glitch by Heather Anastasiu

Divergent read a likes. If you liked Divergent you'll love these.

I Read These and I Know Lots of People Who Liked Divergent Liked These But They Weren’t My Favs

So here’s the deal with these books, I read them but for one reason or another they were not my favorites. Most of these series I didn’t like enough to finish. Whether I couldn’t jive with the characters, the writing style irritated me, or some other personal reason I didn’t love these. But that being said you might. I can see why other people liked that (and many many people do) so you might want to check them out.

  1. The Maze Runner by James Dashner
  2. Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi
  3. The Giver by Lois Lowry
  4. Dustlands by Moira Young (starts with Blood Red Road)
  5. The Razorland Trilogy by Ann Aguirre (starts with Enclave)

I Have Not Read These Personally But I’ve Heard People Love These

  1. Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning (not YA starts with Darkfever)
  2. Uglies by Scott Westerfield
  3. White Rabbit Chronicles by Gena Showalter (starts with Alice in Zombieland)
  4. Hourglass by Myra McEntire

Summer Reading List: 7 Great Books to Read This Summer

Great Summer reading list. Good variety and perfect books for vacation - Rae Gun Ramblings

I’ve had a few people ask me for a Summer Reading list. One wants a few books to take on vacation to carry in her hiking bag to read on the trail while she waits for her husband to venture deeper into nature. Another wants something that would be great to take on the plane. And more than a few mentioned lounging on the beach with a good book to which I’m entirely jealous. Here are the books I think you should make a priority to read this Summer and why. I’ve tried to pick a mix of newer and older books. Ones that lots of people have read and ones that might have been skipped over.

four by veronica roth. Must read prequel/side story to Divergent - Rae Gun RamblingsFour by Veronica Roth

I had the privilege of receiving an advanced copy (it comes out tomorrow) and I fell in love. It’s perfect for Divergent fans. And when I say Divergent I mean BOOK 1. I have mixed feelings about the series as a whole but if you like me fell head over heels when you first read Divergent you want to make sure to pick up this puppy. It’s got everything you loved about that first book. It’s all new stories and they are from Four’s perspective. We get into his mind before HIS choosing ceremony and first years in Dauntless, and some crazy behind the scenes going-ons of time with Tris.  If you are a Divergent fan I recommend putting “trip to the bookstore” on your to do list for tomorrow or buy it now.

if i stay by gayle forman read it before the movie - Rae GUn RamblingsIf I Stay by Gayle Forman

This is one of those books the blew me away when I first read it. There was a lot of hype which made me nervous but it’s as good as everyone says. Not only is it a fabulous book but it’s becoming a movie. So if you haven’t read this super unique book about a beautiful life with one of my absolute favorite bookish families you should do it now. This is a regular old contemporary tale, no magic or powers but a great story that will keep you reading. Also as a perk there is a really awesome sequel. It’s nice since If I Stay works fine on it’s own but if you love it make sure to also check out Where She Went.

the summer i turned pretty cute book perfect for vacation - Rae Gun RamblingsThe Summer I Turned Pretty Series by Jenny Han

If you want super easy reads with sweet love, cute boys, and the beach pick this up. This is one of my favorite contemporary series. It’s not trying to preach anything it’s just a good easy story and a long the way some very loveable characters. This one has been out for a while so it should be easy to find at the library. Also if you like the first one there are a few more and the series is complete so no need to wait for the end of a series.

throne of glass - great book series, strong heroine, romance, action - Rae Gun RamblingsThrone of Glass by Sarah Maas

One of my favorite fantasy series with a great kick butt heroine, tons of action, and a great dose of romance has got to be the Throne of Glass series. These books are so fun and definitely unique. The characters are complex and the story is super fun. If you haven’t already started this series it’s the perfect time because book three is due to hit the shelves this September.

the distance between us by Kasie West cute YA contemporary - Rae Gun RamblingsThe Distance Between Us by Kasie West

This is a cute book about family and figuring what you want out of life. If you’re looking for a fun easy to read romance this is a quickie that you could finish between traveling and down time on a trip. I’ve quickly become a fan of Kasie West after reading her book Pivot Point (more sci-fi/dystopian) and then this. There’s just something about her writing that hooks you right away and keeps you entertained right until the end.

the night circus. highly recommended book - Rae Gun RamblingsThe Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

This is hands down one of my favorite books. It’s got gorgeous imagery and story telling. The story centers on a whimsical circus where things are just a little different. There is magic with a bit of competition (but it’s very light if you’re not into that kind of thing), romance that’s different but more than that there is this really cool story about these people who build and run an interesting circus. I feel like it’s one of those books I can’t describe but it’s just so so awesome I want everyone to read it.

cinder by Marissa Meyer, cinderella meets sci-fi. Great book and series - Rae Gun RamblingsCinder by Marissa Meyer

And finally if you’re looking for a great series to get into and like a little sci-fi, fairy tales, and some fantastic characters pick up Cinder the first book of the Lunar Chronicles. This is a retelling of Cinderella. Actually a cyborg Cinderella and if you’re anything like me you might think that sounds super dumb but I had to eat my words because this book and the rest in the series have quickly be come some of my favorites. THEY ARE SO GOOD! No really the writing, the stories, the characters uggh trust me they are worth checking out. The first three books are out and the fourth is due out next year and even though you’ll finish wanting more and more each book is told from a different characters point of view so it’s not too bad having to wait for the next one. And unlike so many series out there these books just get better as they go along. Romance, action, strong heroines, cute boys, and some great fairy tale sci-fi.

I hope you like this list. I’m currently reading Blindsided by Natalie Whipple, Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo and I’m listing to Mila 2.0: Renegade.

What are you reading or what do you recommended for Summer reading?

Dauntless Chocolate Cake Recipe and Free Divergent Quote Printables

Celebrate Divergent with a recipe and free printables for Dauntless Chocolate Cake at Rae Gun Ramblings

Eep we are just over a month away from the Divergent movie. I’m not shy about my reservations about the quality, casting, etc. but, this is one of my favorite books EVER, so I can’t help but be excited right? In the book there are a bunch of references to the chocolate cake that they have in the Dauntless faction. So I thought what could be better than giving your fellow movie goers a slice of the delicious concoction along with a few cake related quotes. So today I have a Dauntless Chocolate Cake Recipe and Free Quote Printable.

Dauntless Chocolate Cake Recipe and Printable. Super easy and yummy chocolate cake recipe great for Divergent fans and non-readers alike at Rae Gun Ramblings

Every time the cake is referenced it sounds delicious. It’s a solution to sadness. It’s the type of food that you eat to try to cheer yourself or your friends up so I wanted something that was really delicious. When I was thinking of delicious chocolate cakes two popped to mind, my Skor Cake and my Texas Sheet Cake. I decided to allow them to mate and low and behold we have the killer, super rich, super yummy Dauntless Chocolate Cake.

Easy and delicious super rich chocolate cake recipe - Rae Gun Ramblings

  • 4 Tablespoons Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla

  2. When done baking use a tooth pick to poke holes all over the cake.
  3. Pour the whole can of sweetened condensed milk all over the cake.
  4. Allow to soak in about 20 minutes.
  5. Make icing by combining butter and cocoa over in a sauce pan over medium heat until butter is fully melted. Remove from heat whisk in the remaining ingredients.
  6. Pour on top of cake using the back of a spoon to spread evenly.
  7. Allow frosting to set before cutting.

Great Divergent fan recipe and quote printable for Dauntless Chocolate Cake at Rae Gun Ramblings

It’s seriously so good guys! I had to send a bunch home with my mom and sister because I couldn’t stop eating it. Of course then I got a picture only a few hours later from my sister with her half of the pan with only a smidgen left hahaha.

Super yummy chocolate cake recipe, Quote printable and tutorial for fans of Divergent - Rae Gun Ramblings

Now if you want to be super awesome and have a Divergent party or just bring your friends Divergent treats randomly or on movie day you can download my Divergent Cake Quote Printable. I found these cute rectangular liners at the store (maybe for eclairs?) but you could easily cut the cake more square and use cupcake liners. After you trim up your quotes you’ll want to use some black paper cut 4.25 inches by 4 inches. Then fold them in half so they are 4.25×2. Next package up the cake and stable the black part over the end of your bag and with double sided tape attach the quote. (In the pictures I attached the quote first but then I realized I wanted the staple to be hidden so I peeled it off and restuck it). And if you haven’t read Divergent yet, go do it!

2014 YA Book Movies to Get Excited About

7 YA Books to Movie Adaptations in 2014 - Rae Gun Ramblings

Last year was a great year for bookish movies. We had so many to pick from and this year is no exception. The exciting thing about the list for this year is that it contains some of my FAVORITE books. All of these books on the list I read and enjoyed. My least favorite was The Giver but I know I’m definitely in the minority on that one. The rest I would say were really good to great! I have to be honest I am SUPER nervous about some of these especially Vampire Academy and Divergent. Those are two of my favorite book series. However the movies turn out I’m excited to see them! Here are my most anticipated YA Book movie adaptations of 2014. So there it is you’re reading list if you haven’t gotten to all of these.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

  • February 7th
  • These books are great. It’s a terrible name, but fabulous series. I’m not a vampire person either if you haven’t started them and like kick butt heroines and paranormal romance check it out. Be warned book 1 starts out slow but it’s well worth it. These are some of my favorite stories and characters ever!
  • The movie looks totally cheeseball but I guess we’ll find out this weekend.

Divergent by Veronica Roth

  • March 21st
  • I absolutely ADORE this book. It blew me away. You have probably heard about it before but if not and you liked The Hunger Games I’d say check this out. Very interesting ideas and a cool dystopian world and yup another kick but heroine.
  • I’m kind of a Shailene Woodley hater sorry I just see her as Amy Jurgens (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) in every roll I’ve watched. That being said I think I can see her as Tris but the guy they cast as Four looks like a meat head and nothing at all that endeared Four to me in the book. But I’m hoping to be proven wrong.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

  • June 6th
  • This book is as good as everyone says. It’s not as heart-wrenching and tear-jerking as people say. And yes it’s a cancer story. But the characters are so witty and fun and the treatment of the diseases and the life that goes with it, while not shallow, is enjoyable.
  • Shailene again? But actually I think I could see Amy Jurgens working for this role and the trailer looks super good to me.

The Giver by Lois Lowry

  • August 15th
  • People love this book. It made me mad but I can see some good things in it. And I can totally see how if this was the your first exposure to the dystopian genre how it’d would stick. I feel like it’s just one of the canon for YA reading so even though it wasn’t my favorite I still think it’s worth reading.
  • I actually think this might make a better movie than book.

If I Stay by Gayle Foreman

  • August 22nd
  • This book is ah-mazing! I’ve never read a book like it. The whole story is told after the main character has been in a car accident and lays waiting to die or wake up. It flashes through her beautiful life and reasons for and against fighting. Her family is one of my favorites I’ve read about. It’s really great.
  • I like the look of the cast. I hope they do a fair treatment it’s such a good story.

the maze runner movie

The Maze Runner

  • September 19th
  • A boy wakes up with his memory wiped and in an unfamiliar place with a bunch of other boys who have appeared in a similar way, one every 30 days. There’s a maze and dangerous things outside and all of a sudden a girl appears.
  • I had the pleasure of listening to James Dashner speak about the movie and it got me really excited. I liked the book but I just didn’t love it but I see the story and characters as having the potential to be a great movie.

mockingjay part 1 movie poster

Mockingjay Part 1

  • November 21st
  • Third book of the Hunger Games Trilogy. Crazy stuff happens.
  • It’s a part 1 so we don’t even have to worry about “that ending”. I don’t know about you but I’ve thought the other two movies have been great. Captured the spirit of the story and characters and I’m so happy with them. I’m curious about how the movie will be split up. The story is so different than in the first two books. Gale has to finally act and he’s just seemed meh so far but I’m excited.

Tutorial: Shrinky Dink Pendants (yes mine may be a Dauntless Train from Divergent)

I have been blown away by how many of my crafty friends that have never made shrinky dinks. For goodness sakes what kind of childhood did these people have?!! Are you one of them? Well if so shrinky dinks are super awesome sheets of special plastic that you draw on, cut out, and then bake in the oven (yes in the oven) and then they shrink before your eyes. Magic you say, I think so. What was a thin flimsy vellum like sheet gets transformed into hard plastic. It’s pretty cool. So fun to do with kids but that’s a whole other post altogether.

Today I want to share with you how to transform any image you like into a totally awesome pendant. Will it shock any one that I picked an image from Divergent one of my favorite YA book series to make into a pendant? I’ve gushed about this book series many, many times. But one images that is repeated throughout the books is that of the trains. The fearless members of the Dauntless faction jump on and off the moving trains as a part of every day life. (More on the book below.)

  • To make your own pendant first find (or make) an image you like. It will shrink to about 1/3 of the original size. If you want to make your own Dauntless train necklace, you can find the image I used here.
  • They do make shrinky dink paper that you can print on but I used the regular stuff and it printed fine (not perfect mind you but good enough for my liking). Draw or print onto the rough side of the shrinky dink paper.
  • Partially trim around your image leaving a large margin around the area where you want the pendant to hang from. Punch a hole then trim leaving a generous margin around the hole.
  • Bake in the oven on a cookie sheet lined with a brown paper bag at 325 F for about 3 minutes (I had to bake it a bit longer I could tell it was still shrinking). It will go all crazy on you and sometimes it looks like it’s going to fold onto itself but then somehow it uncurls and goes back to normal. Let cool for 30 secons and use a clean spatula to remove. If you want you can press your creation with a potholder or the spatula if it needs to be flattened.
  • After it’s completely cool paint a bit of mod podge to the back to seal the ink.
  • Add a jump ring, chain, and any other accessories (like ribbon) and you’re done.
  • Wear with pride!

And if you’re curious about this Divergent book I keep on raving about here’s the description from goodreads. Seriously it’s one of my favorite books. If you liked The Hunger Games you definitely should check Divergent out.

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue–Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is–she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are–and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

What’s for Dinner: Week #145 and Lately in Awesome Divergent Movie, KIDS, Reached and a new Outlet Mall

So I am once again a failure. I do not have any fresh pasta and frankly I don’t feel like making it today. I have a sneaky bookish crafty plan of awesomeness planned for today. I hope I can pull it off. I will be sharing sneak peeks on my old Instagram as I go.

Day Main Meal Goals (Veggies, Whole Grain, Fish)
Sunday Acorn Squash and Sausage Grains and nuts: granola bars
Veggies: Salads and peas
Fish: tilapia
Monday White Chili and Cornbread
Tuesday Egg Sandwiches
Wednesday Ravioli
Thursday Eat Out
Friday Pork Costeletta,  Mashed Potatoes, and Peas
Saturday Pasta…maybe? ;)

I was thinking of doing a little “lately in awesome” shout out every once in a while, I’m not going to comment to it’s regularity because as the pasta and the last few months have proved I’M.A.BIG.FAT.LIAR. But I’ve got a few awesome tidbits from around the interweb to share with you today.

  • You know how they are making a movie out of the Divergent books by Veronica Roth that I LOVE? Well Shailene Woodley, who I knew from The Secret Life of the American Teenager was cast as Tris. Now in my opinion Amy Jurgens is one of the most obnoxious characters out there so I was a little nervous about the pick. So I added The Descendents movie to my netflix queue and after watching it I think I can see Tris in her. I hope she/they do a good job. Remember how nervous I was about Jennifer and The Hunger Games but I think she made a great Katniss. Here’s where Veronica talked about the Divergent Movie news.
  •  Jessica of Me Sew Crazy has two bits of awesomeness I want to share. First is her Kids Inspiration and Design Series she has going on her blog. All about getting the kiddos involved in the design process and working from their inspiration. I has be so fun to read. You should definitely check it out Second she was featured on Bernina’s We All Sew you can read the write up here. Congrats friend!
  • And this hasn’t happened quite yet but this Tuesday I along with many others including friends from The Broke and The Bookish and Housewife Eclectic will be heading to King English’s released party for Ally Condie’s Reached, the final book in her Matched series. If you’re int he SLC area and enjoy her books you should swing by and definitely say hi. You can get all the details here.
  • Finally Utah County is getting a new outlet mall. I’ll be heading down for the grand opening of the Traverse Outlets this Thursday. Vanessa from Our Thrifty Ideas posted a whole big fancy thing about it , you should join us or check it out later this weekend since it sounds like they have loads of fun things scheduled see her post here..

Dark Days: Meeting Veronica Roth and Dan Wells

The tour was put on by Harper Collins Teen to promote some of their new releases and they just happen to be some of my favorite books of the year and ahem favorite authors.

I may have gone all fangirl crazy on Veronica Roth but whatever hopefully she didn’t think I was too big of a dork. I may have worn my Tris shirt which she seemed to really like (woohoo). That’s her reaction to me showing her my shirt. If you want to see more pictures of the shirt or learn how to make your own see this post.

And I may also have made her a copy of that Insurgent necklace that I made for myself a while back. I’ve got a tutorial and more pictures of the actual necklace if you’re interested in making your own.

Veronica Roth (Divergent) – Dan Wells (Partials) – S.J. Kincaid (Insignia) – Aprilynne Pike (Wings)

The panel discussion was really interesting and fun. I think the best part was while talking about juggling romance in their stories Veronica and Aprilynne were both saying that they have fan voices telling them “it’s time for more kissing” and Dan piped in and said he hears those voices in real life and it’s always time for kissing since he has five kids. They were all really fun.

(lisa – jana – me – tanya – heidilindamark)

My friends and I had a total blast. Does it count as photo bombing if you tell everyone in the picture where to stand so you can place yourself perfectly at the last minute? ahem Mark.

Insignia only came out the day before the tour stopped in SLC so I haven’t read that yet but I am so so excited to read it based on the synopsis and the discussion. And of course the Divergent books and Partials are some of my all time favorites and considering I am NOT a fairy fan at all I really enjoyed the Wings books (I’m still making my way through the series).

Oh and as a cool bonus I finally got to meet Emily who blogs over at Emily’s Reading Room and who has guest blogged over here in person. I’ve had the idea for this shirt Divergent inspired shirt for months. After finally finding a tank on clearance that would work I couldn’t find gray fabric paint. I decided to wing it and discovered that yes you can mix fabric paint to make your own custom colors. Awesome right?

If you didn’t already catch on this my Ode to Tris from the Divergent series shirt. The three birds are supposed to be the bird tattoo got to represent her family members.  I also added a quote that I love that epitomizes her choice to join Dauntless and be herself. I’m wearing this today to go pick up my copy of Insurgent.

I absolutely love the fact that I can pick up a clearance shirt and using some freezer paper and fabric paint make a totally unique fan shirt! If you want to make out your own you can check out my full freezer paper stenciling tutorial here.

Also since I know a few of you you share my love for the Divergent series so here are the images I used. Just click on them to enlarge and then you can save them to your computer.

The birds were edited from a few of the birds here.  I selected a few, flipped and angled them so they would be how I wanted in a cluster of three and be flying towards the heart.

Happy Insurgent (and Bitterblue) Day! Oh and if you haven’t seen my Insurgent and Divergent necklaces that I made last week using an image from the book cover check them out, I’m super proud of them.

UPDATE: After many months of people asking if they can buy one from me I’ve finally started to sell some of these Tris tanks t-shirts and book bags. For more about ordering just email me at raegunwear at g mail.
