15+ Best YA Book Villains

We tend focus a lot on the heroes and heroines when describing great books but so often it’s the villains that really make a story magical!

Great reading list full of awesome villains that keep you on your toes. Young Adult Books

In honor of the fact that two of most notoriously hated villains in Young Adult Literature can be found in the Harry Potter books and because the theme of this month’s Owl Crate is Good vs. Evil, that my sister and I would share our most memorable villains. (Are you as excited about week two of the Happy Harry Potter series as I am?)

Awesome villains in Young Adult books. We all loved to hate Harry Potter's Umbridge. Great reading list.

We’ll be hopping on the We Heart Books facebook page tonight at 5PM EST to chat through the WHYS of our choices but I’m also linking my Amazon associates links for each book so you can get a description and learn more about each title. I’ve got to say I found it surprisingly hard to come up with a non-spoiler villains list. It seems the plot of A LOT of books with GREAT villains is pretty much “who done it?”

  • The King You know that saying about power corrupting? Well that plus magic! – Throne of Glass
  • Dolores Umbridge I must not tell lies and okay we’ll say Voldy too ;) – Harry Potter
  • Queen Levana Why wouldn’t you just mind force everyone to do your bidding even to say marry you if you could? – The Lunar Chronicles  (starts with Cinder)
  • The Darkling – The Grisha Trilogy (starts with Shadow and Bone)
  • The Dad Well he’s a serial killer who raised his son as an accomplice no biggie – Jasper Dent Series (starts with I Hunt Killers)
  • Commandant Oh she’s the worse kind of head mistress meets drill Sargent but there are lots of baddies – An Ember in the Ashes series
  • Defiance Bolton RamseySong of Ice and Fire (not YA starts with A Game of Thrones)
  • The Duchess of the Lake I don’t care how dangerous it is for you I’ll use YOUR body for what I want when I want oh and if it doesn’t work out I’ll find someone else to give it go – The Lone City Series (starts with The Jewel)
  • Adelina Amouteru  We absolutely love that this is told from the villain’s perspective which of course makes it hard to totally see her as a villain – The Young Elites series
  • The Uncle Yeah this guy gave me the major creeps. The lengths he’ll go and the evil he’ll do makes me really anxious about reading the sequel  – Gold Seer Trilogy (starts with Walk the Earth a Stranger)
  • The Seeker She totally stressed me out why won’t she just give up already!? – The Host
  • EveryonePenryn and the End of Days Series (starts with Angelfall)
  • Cole Big whoop that he’s boss of the Underground he’s awesome a super hot musician – Everneath series
  • Alexandra Miles  She’s the ultimate High School mean girl. But the depths of her scheming oh my! – Winning series

Harry Potter Wand Holster Tutorial

I have wanted to make a wand holder for a long time not but totally put it off. So I’m SUPER excited to share this tutorial today because I adore how it came out!How fun a wand holster to carry your harry potter wands. Great sewing tutorial and how to make DIY wands too.

Too fun! DIY Harry Potter Magic wand holster. Sewing tutorial.

Get the Harry Potter Shirts here

This tutorial is a little more complicated sewing than I normally share because of the zipper and all the steps but it’s still not that hard of a project but if you prefer to just purchase one you can get one here. Oh and if you don’t already have a wand to put in your holster I have a super fun and super easy Wand Tutorial.

Have your wands at the ready at all times with this Harry Potter inspired DIY wand holster. Sewing tutorial

My little guy has been carrying a wand around since we made them. He took one on a walk today and it made my geeky Harry Potter loving heart explode.

What You Need

  • Holster Fabric
  • Strap Fabric – adults will need two strips of 3″x44″ fabric, one strip for the kid size.
  • Small Zipper (optional)
  • D- Ring (optional)
  • Snaps (optional)

What to do

Before I start I just wanted to say I wanted mine to be adjustable and have a zipper pocket so that makes things a little more complicated. BUT you could leave out the zipper and just make your strap the right size for the wearer or even use a safety pin instead of snaps and that would save some work.

1. Cut your fabric out. You can see the general shape I used. I meant to make a free pattern but I totally forgot. I will update this post with a pattern that can be downloaded if you want to save it or pin it and check back later.

2.  Make the straps. For the adult size sew the short ends together. Iron your strap fabric in half  (so it’s skinnier) and sew down the length.  Turn right side out and iron.

3. Make the Wand Pocket. The wand pocket fabric should be about 3″x 7″ depending on your wand length. Do the same as you did for the strap.

Steps to making a wand holster

4. Tuck in one side of the wand pocket tube and sew closed. Position on the holder piece and sew down along both sides. Make sure it’s just one layer of fabric NOT folded.

5. Open both holster pieces and with right sides together sew across the V to connect them at the bottom edge.

How to make a Harry Potter wand holster tutorial

6. Mark where your zipper should go and then with right sides together sew the the raw side edges closed of the non- zipper and and up to where the bottom of the zipper will go. You do want to leave the top edges open. (If you want to skip the zipper just sew it all and leave the top openings.)

Make a zipper pouch wand holder

7. Sew in the zipper.

8. Turn right side out and tuck under the top edges on both sides.

How to make a Harry Potter wand holster adjustable. sewing tutorial

9. Cut off 3 inches from your strap, loop it through the D ring and tuck it into one opening. Sew closed. (If you are making a fitted strap you can skip the D ring and just sew a strap that is the correct length tucking in top openings)

Sew an adjustable magic wand holster perfect for harry potter fans.

10. Sew the raw side of the other strap in the other opening. At this point you can use a safety pin to make your strap adjustable or put in snaps. Just mark where you want your snaps and add them.

How awesome, magic wand holsters. Perfect for Harry Potter lovers. This would be great to take to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

We’ve all had fun running around with our wands this Summer. And yes the kids love it as much as I do ;)

Dumbledore Quote Pillowcase Tutorial

affiliate DISCLOSURE

I’m a bit obsessed with modern calligraphy quotes. And where better to put those quotes than on some awesome throw pillows. So today I’ve got a super easy tutorial for making a Dumbledore Quote Pillowcase. Happy Harry Potter!

awesome DIY dumbledore quote pillowcase tutorial

There are so many wonderful quotes in the Harry Potter books and movies but I love this one from Dumbledore. This version has a few bits cut out for the sake of space.  “Words are our most inexhaustible source of magic.” It’s a nice one right!?

words are our most inexhaustible source of magic pillow tutorial

This is SO easy even if you are a newbie sew-er you should be able to do this. Really it just requires sewing two straight lines. And if you’re totally against making your own you can just buy a Words are Magic Pillow here.

DIY quote pillow case sewing tutorial

What you Need

  • 18 X 38 piece of black fabric
  • 12×12 piece of Heat Transfer Vinyl in gold
  • Cutting Machine like Cricut Explore
  • Dumbledore Quote Image – get the FREE DESIGN here (oops I caught the typo after posting this and doing a whole live video tutorial yikes! The design is spelled correctly and I’ll update pictures when I can make a new pillow and take more pictures)

What To Do

  1.  Cut the fabric. For a 17″ pillow you need a piece of fabric 17X38 inches big. For other sized pillows you need the fabric to be the size of the pillow side (in my case 17″) by the side times 2 plus 4 more inches. So for mine it was 17″ by (17X2)+4
  2. Finish the short edges of the fabric.
  3. Fold one side under and hem. This is for the side of the fabric that will show on the outside.
  4. Fold the fabric in on both ends (right side of the fabric inside) so that there is a square the size of the pillow in the middle. For mine this means that I folded each end in 10.5″. There should be a couple of inches of overlap. Iron or pin in place.
  5. Iron the folds into place
  6. Cut your quote out of Heat Transfer Vinyl see this tutorial if you’ve never done that.
  7. Iron onto the center and then fold the flaps back over and pin.
  8. Sew across the top and bottom.
  9. Flip inside out and stuff the pillow into the pillow case.

Easy Knit Skirt Tutorial

I love a good comfy but still play-in-able skirt. This easy knit skirt tutorial is perfect for cranking out tons of easy to wear skirts the kiddos with love.

Great sewing tutorial so easy to adjust for different sizes. The kid loves this knit skirt and I love that it was an easy sew in less than 30 minutes.

I did a kid size one for my niece but I love how it turned out so I’m thinking of making an adult version. You could easily make this for any size person including adults and babies with just a few measurement changes.

Darling quick and easy sewing tutorial. 30 minute knit skirt (and that's totally Gryffindor inspired!)

Today I’m sharing this obviously as a part of my Happy Harry Potter series. Gryffindor PRIDE!!! But also in conjunction with the girls from Simple Simon and Co and their Skirting the Issue series. I’ve participated in this for a few years and it’s such a great cause. The basic idea is to sew and donate skirts to girls in foster care so they can have something new to wear when the school year starts. It’s such a cool thing and since skirts are SO easy to make it’s very very easy to get involved. Here are a ton easy skirt tutorials! This year I’m going to have my nieces sew a few to send over! You can read more about the program and how to get involved here. Now let me show you have quick and easy it is to make this little knit skirt.

Measurements You Need

  • Elastic Waist Measurement: unstretched, for this almost 8 year old (she wears size 7/8) I used 22 inches and when sewn it ends up being about 21 inches around when not stretched.
  • Skirt Length Measurement: we wanted a fun cheerleader skirt feel so it’s a little on the short size but this skirt I cut the fabric 12 inches the full 60″ length of the fabric (if your fabric is only 54″ that should work fine too if you’re making it an adult size you might want to add some width but maybe not just wrap it around yourself and see if you like the fullness). You will lose about 1/2 inch in length sewing. I left the bottom edge unsewn but if you want to hem it add in some extra length for that. This is my favorite way to hem knits if you’re curious about that.

30 Minute Knit skirt tutorial. So cute but comfy too. Made this and the kiddo loves it. Will sew more!

What You Need

  • 2 inch elastic (I cut 22″ x 2″)
  • Knit Skirt Fabric (I cut 12″ tall by 60″ wide)
  • Knit Band Fabric 4.5″ by the length of your elastic (I cut 4.5″ X 22″) You can skip the band fabric but I think it gives it a more clean look.

What to Do

  1. Sew or serge the short ends of your main fabric right sides together to form a tube.
  2. Do the same for the band fabric.
  3. Overlap the elastic and sew down using a zig zag stitch to form a tube.
  4. Gather the top edge of the main fabric tube. I found this cheater serger gathering trick works great for this.
  5. Fold the band fabric around the elastic so it’s like a sandwich tube.
  6. Line up the raw edges of the band (so 3 layers fabric elastic fabric) with the right side of the gathered edge of the skirt and make sure the fabric is gathered but not all the way flush with the elastic you want it 4-6 inches wider than the elastic (or really a little bit wider than the wearer’s hips).
  7. Serge the band to the skirt stretching the elastic as you go. It’s a bit awkward especially on a kids item since the 2 inch elastic tends to be tight but just go slow and stop and readjust as needed.
  8. And you are done!

We're obsessed with these 30 minute knit skirts. Great easy sewing tutorial

So cute right? And L loves it! She was begging to take it home after we took pictures but I wanted to make sure the pictures turned out. I’m sure I’ll be making her more in the near future!

Great sewing tutorial and super clear instructions for how to make a pattern to fit everyone. 30 minute knit skirt tutorial
