Do I Need an Interactive Harry Potter Wand?

When I didn't think they could make the Wizarding World of Harry Potter any better they go and completely blow my mind with the extension and interactive Harry Potter wands!

great tips on wizarding world of harry potter wands

You know how we've ALL practiced Wingardiun Leviosa? Well picture that but you actually see the the feather floating into the air after you swish and flick. But really you can see it in my video below! Universal Orlando was seriously my happy place before but guys the interactive wands are a game changer.

great resource on wands and universal vactions

Are the Wands at Universal Worth It?

But you might be wondering, are the wands actually worth the cost? And to that I say a resounding YES. Last year when I went to Universal Studios Orlando with my family we all got wands. And I brought mine back with me this year. There was just something magical about having our own wizarding right hands. But it's not just a wonderful souvenir of a great vacation, we were immediate able to USE the wands to magnify our fun. Do the wand ceremony in Olivander's it's WAY fun and really cute.

What Do the Wands Do?

You see all around the Wizarding World both in Hogesmede and in Diagon Alley there are medallions on the floor. These let  you know that it is a spot to cast a charm. Engraved on the medallions are the incantation to use as well as directions for how to move your wand. The exact position and speed can take some practice but once you get it you can watch your spell change things. Also there are some secret ones that you can find (ask the staff if you need clues of where to look). For Harry Potter fans young and old it's worth while to carve out a chunk of the day to go to each spot and casts the spells. It's super fun. One of the best things about the Wizarding World is the 360 degree angles of awesomeness. EVERYWHERE you look, in every direction, your immersed in the magic. And when you add the wands to the mix you all of a sudden become an active participant.

Can't make it to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter right now. No worries tour it through pictures while you get excited for when you can really be there!

I've said it before but the attention to detail is incredible and each of the magical displays show different fun scenes and peeks into the world so many of us have brought into our hearts through the books and movies. If you have not had the honor of visiting the Wizarding World at Universal Orlando I'm telling you it's worth saving up for. 100% guys make it happen. For a bit of eye candy you can see my photo tour of the Wizarding World and if you want a video tour check out my videos I took while walking through Diagon Alley and Hogsmede on my most recent trip. It really is amazing.

all about wands at the wizarding world of harry potter

Which Wand Should You Get?

Now you might be curious about some muggle facts about the wands. The wands are stunning and there are a variety of styles and sizes. You can buy the wands styled after those that your favorite characters carried. I think my favorite character wands is Luna's SOOOO pretty. In addition to charter wands there are generic ones. Generic in the sense that they aren't styled or attached to a witch or wizard from the stories. I opted for one of those. I just felt like it was more MY WAND that way. But they are all special in their own ways. While we all know that the wand choses the wizard and all you might want to consider the size of your want when you purchase it. Remember you'll be carrying them around the park when you're not using them and if you're like me you'll want to lug the protective box it comes with just "in case". I picked out a wand I loved but it happened to be one of the longer ones and it was definitely trickier to fit into the lockers with the rest of my stuff when I was going on the roller coasters. A few times I had to get two lockers. On this last trip I was gifted with one of the smaller wands and that was so much easier to carry around and stash when I was ready to ride. Just something to keep in mind.

must read guide to interactive wands at universal

I would encourage you as you are planning for your trip to the Wizarding World make sure to work into your budget buying the wands even if your whole family shares one it will make the magic even more real and memorable. There's just something so fun about casting the charms yourself and working together as a family to see what the different spells do.

cabana bay beach resort

I feel like the most blessed girl ever to have been hosted on this last trip. It was the best mix of work and pleasure. We spent the first half of the days talking shop while working at the gorgeous retro Cabana Bay Beach Resort which made me feel like I was transported straight into the Jetsons cartoon world.  As a perk for staying in a park hotel we got park passes with early admission. It was so awesome to have such a comfy place to come back and crash at after our jammed packed afternoon and evenings in the park and at City Walk. I think I'll have to write a whole post about this place because it was so cute and I can't wait to go back!

Squatty Potty Unicorn gold

I brought home my very first Squatty Potty which I didn't even know I needed (but now we can't imagine living without!) as well as unicorn gold which I'll be giving to all the men for Father's Day. The stuff is seriously magic. Every time we use a public bathroom now Teddy tells me I should buy a bottle for them and just leave it there hahahaha. We got to drive around in style thanks to the folks at Kia. And my oh my was that a snazzy ride! And of course I am so grateful to have gone with such an amazing bunch of blogger friends who thankfully loved Harry Potter as much as I did and never rushed me through the magic.

13 Things Every Harry Potter Fan Needs

affiliate DISCLOSURE

Harry Potter fans are some of the best kinds of people in the world. Okay I know much of the world is a fan but when people start gushing about Harry Potter there is just a special kind of magic that happens.

Great Harry Potter gift guide full of things every harry potter fan needs. Super unique ideas

And so to celebrate that fact I thought I would share some awesome but not as commonly known items that Every Harry Potter fan needs! If you have a Potterhead in your life here's a cheat sheet for their next birthday or Christmas present or Thursday. You're welcome. Psst if you want all of these you'll want to make sure you're following me on Instagram wink wink.

How fun get a personalized Hogwarts acceptance letter. Great gift idea.

Every Harry Potter fan needs a Hogwarts Letter with YOUR NAME on it. Is this fabulous or what!? Among other Harry Potter awesomeness, Pieces by Polly sells awesome personalized Hogwarts acceptance letters that come stamped and addressed to your favorite witch or wizard.

Too fun! DIY Harry Potter Magic wand holster. Sewing tutorial.

Of course after you know you are a wizard, every Harry Potter fan needs their very own Magic Wand. If you can't make it out to Olivander's at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (which I do recommend making it out to at some point it's AMAZING!!!) or if you just want a wand that you can keep on you and not stress about breaking you can very easily make your own magic wand!

Once you have a wand every Harry Potter fan needs a Magic Wand Holster. A what? It's a simple over the shoulder bag for carrying your magic wand on you at all times available in both child and teen/adult sizes. The slot and style make it so your wand is always at the ready and it even has a zipper pouch for a few of your must haves. This is so fun and I wish I had one when I went to the Wizarding World in Florida last year. Also if you don't already have a wand you can get one with your holster!

The Unofficial Guide to Crafting the World of Harry Potter by jamie Harrington

Next every Harry Potter fan needs some great spells to practice. What better way to practice than with a whole slue of crafts and potions that can be found in Jamie Harrington's The Unofficial Guide to Crafting the World of Harry Potter. The projects in this book are SO fun and they are perfect for tweens to do on their own or as great activities for the whole family. If you need holiday boredom busters for your Potter fans this will be a life saver.

Owlcrate monthly Young Adult fiction book subscription box

After a hard day at Hogwarts every Harry Potter fan needs to be comforted by some Owl Post, that is book mail! My favorite kinds of book mail are monthly book subscription boxes. I have two favorites you need to check out. First up is Owlcrate which mails a newly released Young Adult book along with 3-5 awesome hand curated bookish items that all fit the monthly theme. For example last month's theme was Good vs. Evil (and you can see my sister and I unboxing our boxes at the end of this video) and the one before that was Royalty (our unboxing of that one is here). This month's theme is Fast Times at YA High and I couldn't be more excited!

Lit Joy Crate Monthly bookish subscription Box. Young Adult books

I also really love Lit Joy Crate for monthly bookish mail needs. What is fun about their boxes is that they offer 3 different subscriptions. A board box for the little guys (see Teddy and me opening one together), a picture book box, and a young adult box that is great for teens and adults. The picture above shows an example of the Lady Rebel Young adult box. For all their boxes the accompanying items tie into the book itself. Super fun right!?

Awesome and creative Harry Potter shirts. For baby, children, teens, and adults.

Now I may just be trying to justify the dozens of shirts I own but I am a firm believer that every Harry Potter fan needs at least one awesome Harry Potter shirt. Whether it's a tribute to your favorite character, like the Snape is my Homeboy or You're Just as Sane as I am Luna shirts, or a jab at Voldy himself with the Make Love Not Horcruxes shirt, a fun Harry Potter inspired shirt (or 20) or totally a must. And if you have kids and babies they totally need Potter shirts too :)

Harry Potter Funko Pop Figures

I admit I was a slow adopter of the Funko Pop figures but I can't help but love those big headed little guys especially when they look like my favorite witches and wizards. I believe that every Harry Potter fan needs a Harry Potter inspired funko. There are so many to pick from I just got my own Dementor and Dumbledore last week! Really there are tons and they are so cute and awesome!

Custom Expecto Patronum necklace with lots of animal charms to pick from.

And speaking of Dementors, to be on the safe side you might want to keep this custom Expecto Patronum necklace close by. With loads of animal charms to pick from so you can be sure the patronus will truly be yours. But really I think all true Harry Potter fans need a piece of Harry Potter inspired jewelry. Yup I do. I should pull out all my HP jewelry because I have TONS and I love them SO much.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Book

I believe every Harry Potter fan needs a copy  of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child because I have been just shocked by the number of Harry Potter loving friends that haven't read this book yet. You guys it's the 8th story and it's REALLY good. And it's Harry and his friends and his family and it's more from the wizarding world that we love!!! Really I adored it. If you're nervous at all that it's in play script format don't be. I actually really liked it after I caught onto the flow of writing. And you know what doesn't happen in script format? Pages and pages and chapters and chapters of wandering through the dessert. I'm serious I'd be happy for many more books like this and need I say it again, it's MORE Harry Potter!!!

Harry Potter Towel. Quidditch robe inspired towel for kids and adults

Might I also suggest reading the newest installment of Harry Potter in a relaxing bath or at the pool or at the beach? And just because it's totally awesome every Harry Potter fan needs a Harry Potter towel. I mean it looks like Harry in his Quidditch robes and it has a freaking snitch on it! Trust me you need one and they come in both teen/adult as well as kid sizes.

mypotterfacts awesome source for Harry Potter trivia

Dying of cuteness. We need these quidditch robes Harry Potter hooded towels! Great sewing tutorial and where to purchase.

Watch the Step by Step Video Tutorial
What You Need
  • 1 Bath Towel
  • 1 Hand Towel
  • Iron-on Vinyl in black and yellow
  • Cutting Machine
  • 4"X44" Fabric for Scarf (I used Riley Blake Chevrons)
What to Do
  1. Pre-wash your towels and scarf fabric.
  2. Cut out black glasses, a yellow lightening bolt scar, and yellow snitch. I used my Cricut Explore to do this. With the included program you can use any image to make a cutting design. If you don't have a cutting machine you can also just trace your design off of your computer screen or print of your design and cut it out like a stencil.
  3. Iron your towels to remove moisture.
  4. Iron your vinyl onto your towels. See my how to use iron-on vinyl post if you have never used it before.
  5. For the hood fold one long edge over about 1 inch and place your glasses above the folded edge and the the scar above that. Unfold your towel before yo press it. I did this on my heat press with a piece of cardboard underneath but if you use a home iron I recommend doing it on the floor so you have better leverage.
  6. Iron your snitch onto your towel edge.
  7. Fold the long edge on the vinyl side up 1 inch and sew into place. The edge of the towel should be right below the glasses.
  8. Fold in half and cut down to the right depth of the hood. For mine own I had to remove 4 inches. For my kiddo's I removed 4 inches from the depth (opposite edge of the glasses) and then 3 inches from the bottom edge/height (where the neck line would be). I have found that not all hand towels are created equally so you might want to compare the hood of a sweatshirt with your towel to get a good size.
  9. Serge or sew and finish with a zig zag stitch the back edge of your hand towel to form the hood.
  10. Iron the long edges of your scarf under 1/4 inch.
  11. Find the middle of the top edge of your towel and mark with a pin.
  12. Pin the hood to the body towel with the scarf on top. You want the straight side of the hold lined on top of the the body towel and then place the scarf on top of that. I like my scarf to start at the side opposite of the snitch so when it is is on the scarf is uneven and has a "wrapped around the neck" feel to it. Remember to tuck the short edges of the scarf under when you're pinning.
  13. Sew around all the edges of the scarf making sure to catch all layers (scarf, body towel, hood towel).
  14. And now you're done!

I've had a lot of people ask me about my Harry Potter nails as they've spied them over the last two weeks of Happy Harry Potter so I thought I'd share a tutorial.

How to do awesome Harry Potter nails at home. DIY nail stamping tutorial. This would be so fun for vacation to the wizarding world of harry potter

They are super detailed but the best part is that I use a technique called nail stamping where you don't need any artist painting skill at all to achieve the super fun designs.

LOVE these Harry Potter nails. THere is a full video tutorial for how to do them at home.

Nail stamping is relatively easy although there is a small learning curve for getting the right pressure but after a try or too you can get super awesome looking nails in a snap.

Check out the video tutorial to see exactly how it works.

What To Do
  1. Apply a base coat to each nail.

DIY Hogwarts Swim Team Shorts fun Harry Potter Fashion

It's the last Thursday of the month as well as Happy Harry Potter week 2 which means I've got a Sew Our Stash Harry Potter edition coming at you. And I have to say that I absolutely ADORE the two items I made for myself this month.

Harry Potter board shorts and towel. And other DIY potter fashion

I liked my shirts from last month and have worn them a ton but I squealed from delight when I finished my two pieces for this month.

How awesome are these Harry Potter inspired Hogwarts Swim Team Board Shorts DIY sewing pattern

The first are these swim shorts. I used the Swim and Surf pattern by Gracious Threads along with some board short material that I got from Peek-a-boo Pattern Shop. And I couldn't resist attacking them with heat transfer vinyl to add Hogwarts Swim Team emblem to them with my Cricut explore. And you guys I TOTALLY love them.

DIY women board short sewing patten review

I made the size 16 in the Run (medium) length. I like it a lot but I think I'll make the Swim (shortest) length next. I did the simplest version without a tie or eyelets and used regular elastic instead of multiple rows of swim elastic. I figure IF I wear them in the water and the elastic breaks down fast I can just open the casing and replace it easy peasy. If you're looking for an easy and cute board short pattern I highly recommend this pattern. I will definitely be making more for myself!

I had originally planned on sharing my easy technique for making bias tape like I used on the shorts BUT I had some major technical issues so I'll have to share that later.

Deathly Hallows tank top. Santa Fe sewing pattern review. DIY shirt

Now to my second creation the Santa Fe Top by Hey June Handmade. You all know I love Adrianna's patterns. I seriously love this tank. I made the Large which was exactly what my measurements suggested I should make and I think it fits great.

Super cute women's tank pattern. Great fit and fast sew. I will be making many more

I love the flowy style and the various options. I'm excited to try both the more narrow tank version (this is the wider tank) as well as the actual sleeved versions.

Fabulous diy harry potter tank and sewing pattern review for women

It came together SO fast I really can't wait to make more. Goodness I really need to just cut out a bunch. Of course I had to add some Iron-on vinyl again because I just can't handle plain clothes and I think the Deathly Hallows sign on it is the perfect compliment. And it's totally just a tad off center ugh but I don't think I'll ever but still enough or the shirt will be sitting just so that most people would be able to notice without staring and then they would be the weirdos right!? Don't forget to check out the awesome top that Bev from Flamingo Toes made! We would love you to join us by tagging your selfish sewing with #sewourstash and challenging ourselves to sew at least one wearable item each month for ourselves. And there's still time to enter the Happy Harry Potter giveways! They are amazing guys!
